The network
The Transport Technology Systems Network (FAV) acts as the cluster manager for transport and mobility within the TSB Technology Foundation Berlin. FAV can already look back on ten successful years as a network manager and developer of collaborative projects between research institutions and companies. In the last two years, the more than 400 producing companies and research institutions generated approximately 2,500 new jobs, raising the total number of employees in the area of cars, railways, and aircraft to 51,700.
Main activities
The interdisciplinary FAV team has many years' experience in technology, innovation, and network management for the players of the transport and mobility cluster, which is composed of the defined centres of excellence Railway Technology, Road Transport / Automotive, Intelligent Transport Systems, Logistics, and Aerospace. The goal of the cluster management is to intensify cooperation between SMEs and science, and in particular to foster the internationalisation of the region. The FAV-led network, which consists of companies, research institutions, and transport operators, provides the following services:
* network management and development: "transport and mobility" for science, companies, transport operators, and authorities
* project development: managerial functions and support in:
- bid proposal management for projects
- development of complementary project consortiums
- mobilisation of third-party funds for startup funding
- project management
* representation of the cluster in the context of the coherent innovation strategy of Berlin and the joint innovation strategy of Berlin-Brandenburg
The technological focus
The joint innovation strategy of Berlin-Brandenburg for transport and mobility is the basis for measures and network development in the following centres of excellence.
Railway Technology
With track construction and signalling devices, rolling stock and engineering services, all important activities for the definition and development of the railway systems of the future are present in the region.
Road Transport / Automotive
The network Automotive Cluster Berlin-Brandenburg (aBB) of the automotive industry suppliers is well established in the region. In addition, Berlin serves as a widely noted test site for new engine technologies and fuels.
Intelligent Transport Systems
The capital region is a very important field for providers and operators of innovative intelligent transport systems and is becoming a European model for modern traffic management.
Logistics
The unique potential for logistics in the capital region results from its position in the centre of the "new Europe" and its integration in international development corridors.
Aerospace
Activities in this sector focus on the implementation of projects which strengthen system and subsystem competence in the region, particularly in the areas of engine technology, cabin equipment, and small satellites.
Highlights
RailEnergy (Innovative Integrated Energy Efficiency Solutions for Railway Rolling Stock, Rail Infrastructure and Train Operation)
28 European system integrators, operators, and research institutions are cooperating in the RailEnergy project to sustainably reduce the energy consumption of the railway system through integrated approaches.
HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition)
The goal of this development project is a new combustion process, which combines the advantages of Diesel and Otto engines: high energy efficiency on the one side and minimal particle emissions on the other.
MATNET (Modern Airport, Testbed for New Efficient Technologies)
With this collaborative Berlin-Brandenburg project, the innovative potential of the regional economy and scientific institutions shall be mobilised for the realisation of the future Berlin-Brandenburg International airport.
This project is being co-financed by the European Union European Regional Development Fund.
