Eight new innovation networks join Kompetenznetze Deutschland
Kompetenznetze Deutschlands advisory council met in Berlin to discuss which networks would be accepted as new members of the initiative. After carefully assessing the merits of the 14 applications that had been received, the council selected eight new Networks of Competence.
The new members of the Kompetenznetze Deutschland initiative are:
- BalticNet-PlasmaTec, based in the Greifswald-Rostock-Wismar region, active in the field of innovation Industrial manufacturing:
The network focuses on applications and research in the field of low-temperature plasma technology, especially in connection with environmental protection and biotechnology. In the first instance, the aggressive action of plasmas is exploited in the design of filters; in the second instance, plasmas are used to activate and functionalize the surface of biological products.

This association manages the twinned Bavarian clusters for aerospace and satellite navigation which were recently established as fully-fledged alliances of industrial firms and research institutions in their respective fields, as the successors to an earlier collaborative working group. The fields of application covered by the network range from satellite systems and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) to the use of Galileo technology in connection with the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) program.
http://www.bayern-aerospace.com/ - deENet Kompetenznetzwerk Dezentrale Energietechnologien, based in the northern Hesse/Kassel region, active in the field of innovation Power engineering/Environmental technology:
The focus of the networks activities lies on the integration of decentralized power generation systems in existing energy distribution networks. The use of decentralized energy sources requires a mix of different sources and hybrid systems, their modular interconnection and the intelligent control of power consumption. http://www.deenet.org/ - Ingenieur-Kompetenzzentrum Oberflächentechnik-Norddeutschland (I-KON), based in northern Lower Saxony, active in the field of innovation Industrial manufacturing:
The network develops application-oriented innovations for surface engineering in collaboration with research, education and industrial associations. It investigates new materials, such as solvent-free and functional paints, and develops new methods of integrating them in production processes.
http://www.i-kon.org/ - mst-Netzwerk Rhein-Main, based in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region, active in the field of innovation Mechatronics/Microsystems engineering:
The network focuses on the interface between microscale and nanoscale in the field of sensors and actuators. Current collaborative groups are developing micro-optical sensors, cell-based thermal biosensors and microdrives.
http://www.mst-rhein-main.de/ - NoAE Network of Automotive Excellence, based in the Munich region, active in the field of innovation Mobility, traffic and transportation:
The Network of Automotive Excellence (NoAE) focuses on current subjects of interest to the automotive industry, especially related to variant and complexity management, innovation scouting within the supplier networks, and technology transfer between the automotive and aerospace sectors (A2T).
http://www.noae.com - VisQuaNet, based in the Jena-Erfurt-Ilmenau region, active in the field of innovation Optical technologies/Laser technology:
NEMO-VisQuaNet has set its focus on the topic of visual quality assurance using digital image processing techniques. The network sees itself as a motor of innovation and as a specialist in the use of optical technologies in complex quality-assurance applications.
http://www.visquanet.de - Wind Energy Agency Bremerhaven/Bremen (WAB), based in the Bremen region, active in the field of innovation Power engineering/Environmental technology:
WABs objective is to promote the commercial and industrial use of wind power, particularly from offshore sites. The members of the network develop key technologies for wind turbines, foundation structures for offshore, and the logistics of wind power in the maritime environment.

Kompetenznetze Deutschland sees its role as a club of the best innovation networks in Germany. Being a member of the initiative is a hallmark of quality. Networks interested in joining the initiative can submit an application, and will be required to undergo a specific evaluation procedure. The decision to accept a network as a member is made by an independent panel of experts in consultation with the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.
