ScanBalt German Campus Office opened up

Young researchers find international opportunities

More than 70 guests from the scientific communities in Rostock, Greifswald and Luebeck took part in the opening ceremony of the ScanBalt German Campus Office on 23rd April 2007 in the Biomedical Research Center in Rostock.

Representatives from university and politics, such as Prof. Dr. Thomas Strothotte (Rector University of Rostock), ScanBalt Chairman Prof. Bo Samuelsson and Reinhard Meyer (Chief of State Chancellory Mecklenburg Western Pomerania) underlined the importance of international mobility of actors in the life sciences and the contribution that ScanBalt German Campus Office gives to the governmental life sciences and health economy strategy.

Claas Baustian (23), 4th semester student in the brand new bachelor study course “Medical Biotechnology” at the University of Rostock pointed out very clearly: “What I need for my highly innovative study course is a much more international orientation. The theory stipulates internships and research placements in international biotech companies or research institutions – the reality looks quite different.” Prof. Dr. Gustav Steinhoff, head of ScanBalt German Campus Office, is aware of this misbalance: “ScanBalt German Campus Office acts as node and builds up cooperations for students and researchers in the Baltic Sea Region. One of our first actions is the ‘Research internship exchange board’ where the demands from students meet the international offers and chances, such as ERASMUS exchanges, scholarships and Ph.D. programmes.”

The ScanBalt German Campus Office is funded by the Ministry of education, science and culture in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania. Universities and institutes from other parts of Northern Germany are cordially invited to join the activities.
