Investment in R&D must be further increased, Minister for Education and Science says
Germanys spending of 54 billion euros on research and development puts it at the top of the EU member states. However, in order to achieve the 3% objective decided at Lisbon, further efforts will be necessary.
On the occasion of the publication of the figures for expenditure on research and development, the Minister for Education adn Science, Edelgard Bulmahn, commented in Berlin that it is very pleasing to see that despite the slump in the economy in recent years, there has been continued spending in the field of research and development. Judged in comparison to other EU member states, Germanys spending of 54 billion euros on research and development puts it at the top of the list. In 2003 the percentage of the Gross Domestic Product spent in this area was increased to 2.55%. According to Bulmahn, this can be seen as the result of an improved climate for research and development.
However, in order to achieve the 3% objective decided at Lisbon, the economy, the government and the states must further invest in research and development. We are all responsible, Bulmahn noted.
