Germany participates in the worlds largest experiment
In Malargüe, a small town in western Argentina, plans are currently underway for the worlds largest scientific experiment to observe cosmic radiation: the Pierre Auger Observatory.
There are around 370 scientists and engineers from sixteen different countries participating in the 40 million euro project including researchers from the universities of Aachen, Karlsruhe, Siegen, Wuppertal, from the Research Centre in Karlsruhe, and from the Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in Bonn. One of the main aims of the observatory will be to examine the origins of highly energetic cosmic particles. In addition, scientists plan to investigate the acceleration mechanism which lies behind the particles violent energy. The experiment has been named after the French physicist Pierre Auger who discovered the extended air shower in 1938.
