Publication of the new Studienführer Biologie
The new Studienführer Biologie (biology study guide) provides an overview of the current and ongoing changes leading to internationally-acknowledged bachelor's and master's degrees.
The fourth edition of the Studienführer Biologie summarises important changes that have been made, up to the beginning of the winter semester 2005/2006. The information was collected by the Association of German Biologists (vdbiol) with the support of all biological faculties and student representatives at German universities.
"Nothing is as consistent as change. This is clearly shown by degree courses in biology. Many German universities have introduced new international degrees (bachelor's, masters) or have devised a new set of examination regulations that are currently being discussed by the boards responsible. The gradual reduction of the central university admission through the ZVS (central admissions agency), the introduction of state-specific tuition fees and the introduction of more fee-based training courses will lead to considerable restructuring measures in the near future.
"Dr. Carsten Roller had the unenviable task of contacting all biology faculties and find an agreement on the final version of the latest degree courses in biology, said the President of the Association of German Biologists, Professor Reinhard Paulsen. People wanted to change something practically every day. Now that a lot more than 50% of all faculties have introduced or will introduce bachelors and masters degree courses, the new study guide has changed considerably compared to the previous version.
This current study guide presents the biological study courses (in particular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicine) at all German universities, including universities of applied sciences and gives details on the courses at the respective universities.
Apart from detailed information on the courses, related studies and postgraduate courses, PhD programmes and further education, the book contains valuable tips on the following topics:
- admission, ZVS, selection criteria
- international courses (bachelors, masters)
- where to study and how to change courses
- studies abroad, practical training
- information offices and Internet addresses
In addition to this information, the study guide lists research priorities and presents non-university research institutions and biological associations. In short the book provides information on everything current and future biology students need to know.
The biology study guide online
The biology study guide is also available online in the form of a database including information on more than 950 biological courses at German universities and universities of applied sciences. In addition, the database lists all international courses in Germany, most of which are usually held in English.
