Stem cell research at the Technical University of Dresden
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) approved a new research training group for stem cell research at the Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden). It is Germany's first research training group specifying on this topic.
Under the title of "From cells to tissues: determination and interaction of stem cells and primordial cells in tissue formation" a total of 17 working groups and a junior scientists group will investigate how stem cells and primordial cells develop into tissue.
With a view to applications beyond basic research one of the aims is to find ways to grow organs and thus to fight the constant shortage of donor organs in transplantation medicine. Moreover, other applications may include the replacement of tissue in case of degenerative diseases. Among the target diseases are Parkinson, Alzheimer, diabetes and leukaemia.
The research group will be funded for a period of 12 years with up to 20 million.
