Innovation Contest 2005 Supporting Medical Engineering
Since 1999, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has organised innovation contests focusing on medical engineering which complement existing research funding programmes. This years innovation contest again addresses particular innovative and original research and development concepts in medical engineering.
It is the objective of the programme to support basic investigations (referred to as key experiments) which examine the feasibility of new technologies in medicine. The key experiments must be characterised by a high scientific and technological development risk potential and possess a high application potential for the subsequent economic realisation of the product. Feasibility testing of the suggested concept should be completed within a period of three years and also include suitable in vivo tests. The applicants are also expected to undertake measures for the transfer of results during the investigation.
The concepts to be funded will be selected following a competition with an independent jury evaluating the submitted proposals. The jury will assess the clinical and technical aspects of the suggested proposal, as well as the socio-economical importance and technology transfer aspect of the application.
In order to improve technology transfer, projects involving substantial participation from the industry, will be funded preferentially. The BMBF will only support interdisciplinary projects integrating clinical applications and technical developers.
The application procedure consists of two steps and will include one expert evaluation. Informal proposals of the intended feasibility investigations can be submitted to the project management organisation until 30th June 2005, with the final proposal to be submitted at a later date.
The Innovation Contest 2005 will be managed by the
