'The Dignity of Creatures’ in the age of genetic technology

Genetic technology is one of the most innovative and yet, at the same time, one of the most hotly debated new technologies.

That’s why the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) is setting up a parallel research study, under the name of ELSA (ethical, legal, social aspects), to look into the ethical, legal and social questions regarding molecular medicine. The study will be based at the University of Jena, where the research group, made up of young scientists, will address the question of ‘dignity’ against the backdrop of the current social debate. The focus of the study will be on the dignity of non-human creatures.
The BMBF is supporting the project, which was applied for by Professor Nikolaus Knoepffler, an ethics specialist at Jena, with 564,478 euros. The project is one of four such ELSA projects currently being sponsored by the BMBF.
