Students Association welcomes changes to the immigration law

There are around 174,000 non-EU students currently matriculated at German universities. The changes in the immigration law, which took effect in January this year, have meant considerable benefits for them.

They can now work either 90 whole days or 180 half days right throughout Germany. In addition, they can also do so-called ‘student jobs’, such as being a professorial assistant at university or a tutor in a hall of residence. ‘This is a necessary relaxation of the laws governing part-time jobs, which many students have to have in order to be able to study. Only a minority of students from non-EU countries come to Germany as part of a exchange programme or with a scholarship – most have to take on part-time job to get them through their studies’, Professor Hans-Dieter Rinkens, President of the German Student Association said.
