University of Hohenheim to Focus on Human Nutrition
The only way we can counteract diet-related diseases, which have become a massive problem in the Western world, is by supporting the population with preventive measures regarding healthy nutrition and by increasing their awareness in this area." State Councillor Prof. Dr. Konrad Beyreuther gives nutrition research a major role in this incentive.
On 15 January 2005, State Councillor Beyreuther explained in Stuttgart: Research into the correlation of nutrition and disease-relevant genes is the prerequisite and the basis for effective consumer consultation and education. The new chair of Nutrition Medicine/Prevention established at the University of Hohenheim will support scientists in their research into health and nutrition.
The establishment of nutrition medicine is an integral part of an agreement made in 2003 between the Ministry of Science and the University of Hohenheim. With the establishment of nutrition medicine we hope to improve the profile of the University and support innovative developments, explained Science Minister Prof. Dr. Peter Frankenberg. According to the Minister, the University of Hohenheim has already established a distinctive profile based on agricultural sciences, natural sciences/biology and economic and social sciences.
By giving its assistance for the restructuring needed, the state of Baden-Württemberg is supporting the university in raising its profile through the establishment of new focal points. In particular, life sciences will be restructured and re-focused on food chain management. A new chair of Nutrition Medicine/Prevention has been created and Prof. Dr. Stephan Bischoff was appointed Head of department in November 2004.
In the long-term, it is hoped that the University of Hohenheim will be able to establish a working partnership in nutrition science with the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen.
