European x-ray laser project planned

Nine European countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, in which they have agreed to co-operate on preparing the European X-ray laser, XFEL.

The countries that have signed the Memorandum are Germany, France, Greece, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. They are thereby required to establish the necessary prerequisites to create a governmental agreement to build the research facility by mid-2006. The project will be based in the Helmholtz Centre DESY.
The laser will be able to create extremely bright, ultra short x-rays, which have the properties of laser light and thereby able to deliver photos of the atomic details in materials and biomolecules. The XFEL will open up completely new possibilities both for structural research as well as for industry.
