South West Germany

Coblenz - Trier - Saarbruecken - Karlsruhe - Freiburg

The Region South West Germany can be divided into 3 different areas that are all heterogeneous. The first area reaches from the Swiss and French boarder at the south and west, till the east part of the black forest up to Karlsruhe and Heidelberg in the north. The economical backbones are mechanical engineering, micro technology and new materials research and development. The second area is the agglomeration Saar that is concentrated around Saarbrucken has a significant position in the mining industry. Furthermore ICT and biotechnological enterprises got attracted and are now a big part of the local economy. The third area reaches from the French boarder in the west, Saarbrucken in the south and Marburg and Giessen at the northeast. Apart from the rural zones in the southwest of this area, there is an agglomeration of well known Universities and a focal point for optical industry in the northeast of this area.
