German Chambers of Industry and Commerce
The Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) is the central organisation of the 80 Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs) in Germany. At their behest and in coordination with them, it represents the interests of German trade and industry vis-à-vis the decision-makers of the Federal Republic of Germany and European institutions.
The DIHK is a registered association; its members, the IHKs, are
corporations under public law. These speak for approximately 3.6
million business enterprises. The regional IHKs transfer tasks and
authority in the area of political activities on a national and
European level to the DIHK. However, the DIHK has no authority to issue
instructions to the IHKs, but can make recommendations.
The main tasks of the DIHK include securing and promoting cooperation
between the IHKs and ensuring regular exchange of experience. The DIHK
also promotes common points of view of the IHKs concerning all
questions of general interest for trade and industry to German public
authorities and other entities.
