Security related research is an important building block to save freedom, security and justice in Europe. It also contributes to the development of technologies and capabilities to support other European policies in areas such as transport, civil protection, energy, environment and health. In 2007 security research has entered the EU domain with its admission to the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP7). The EU Member States have earmarked a total of € 1.4 billion for funding this theme over the duration of FP7 from 2007-2013.
To improve the competitiveness of the European security industry, co-operation and strategic partnerships among research, science and industry in Europe have to be fostered. In 2006 the Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) Northern Germany established the Forum on “Safety and Security Systems in Europe” (S3) to provide an information exchange and networking platform for the safety & security community.
During the two-day conference thematic sessions will cover new
developments in main fields of technology. As usual the IRC offers a
Pre-Arranged Meeting Service to stimulate the building of transnational
research or technology transfer partnerships during the event. For the
first time the S3-Forum 2008 includes a demonstration session for
prototypes. Especially small and medium technology enterprises engaged
in different positions of the value chain of security products are
invited to participate and to present their ideas.
