A group of endogenous regulatory RNA-molecules, the so-called microRNAs (miRNAs) appear to be involved in the regulation of about 30% of all human genes. These “small RNA” molecules (sRNA) also play a role in the development of diseases such as cancer, diabetes or neurological disorders. Disease-associated changes of miRNA expression patterns provide new prognostic and diagnostic opportunities and are qualified for the development of respective clinical markers.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>News Item</dc:type>

This method involves applying a low voltage to a pair of rail tracks which are isolated from the rest of the network and monitoring whether the voltage is short-circuited by the wheels and axles of a passing train. Rust and dirt that may cover the rail surface over time can create significant problems. The present invention consists of a device that allows to break through the insulating surface and thus ensures reliable signalling. This is achieved by creating sparks between the carriage wheels and the rails. Advantages: no modifications required to the track network, can be implemented in cross border traffic, low costs, independent of the electricity network, etc.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>News Item</dc:type>

During a breakdown, a p-n junction always emits light. It is this light emission that is recorded by the photo diode which is integrated in close proximity of the junction. In response to the strength of the light emission, one can then adjust the voltage or current that is applied to, resp. passes through the junction. Advantages: increased power of transistors, e.g. in oscillator circuits (radar, etc), increased reliability of ICs, increased operating range, protection from destruction.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>News Item</dc:type>

Affected fetuses have also associated oligo-hydramnios with the development of pulmonary hypoplasia, a scenario almost always associated with perinatal death. For treatment a ’Michael Harrison’ catheter can be inserted for a continuous bladder drainage. This procedure may be associated with maternal and fatal morbidity as the needle for inserting the catheter is unacceptably thick. An aggravating factor is that the fetus himself often pulls out the catheter, leading to repeated implantations. Due to these severe disadvantages, in most cases the disease is not treated at all.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>News Item</dc:type>

It complicates 3% of pregnancies and is responsible for a third of all preterm births. Repetitive transabdominal amnioinfusions for treatment of PPROM showed low benefit in case of fluid loss within 6h. The successful treatment of PPROM by the use of a subcutaneously implanted Amniotic Fluid Replacement Port System in humans for long-term amnioinfusion was approved twice in patents. In addition, the new technology is improved by a special intrauterine catheter which is characterized by a small diameter and can be placed via a very thin finder needle under ultrasound control. The catheter is fixed by the use of two balloons, which surround the uterus’ wall. The balloons therefore avoid the dislocation of the catheter and seal the uterus’ puncture site, whereby the risk of an ascending peritonitis is decreased significantly.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>News Item</dc:type>

The surprising answer is revealed in the Aug. 27 issue of Molecular Cell, where German researchers explain how they discovered the function of Hsp12, a protective mechanism unlike any previously observed. Unfolded within the cell's aqueous cytosol, Hsp12 folds into helical structures to stabilize the cell membrane.
<dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher>
<dc:rights></dc:rights>
<dc:type>News Item</dc:type>
