The network
PhotonicNet is a partnership of internationally renowned research centres, universities and world leading companies in the field of optical technologies, with core competencies in "optical precision technology". The cooperation between industry and science opens up the enormous potential the tool "light" offers, providing a fast and efficient transfer of scientific knowledge and technology to the market. 40 PhotonicNet partners with 3,500 employees generate significant synergetic effects through an intensive dialogue between R&D, production and application.
Main activities
Focus on Light – In the Heart of Lower Saxony
PhotonicNet, one of nine regional competence networks for optical technologies in Germany, started in 2001 to promote optical technologies in the State of Lower Saxony.
The PhotonicNet area, concentrated in particular in the Hannover / Braunschweig / Göttingen metropolitan region, has a reputation as a centre of optical technologies with a great tradition. Additionally, the longstanding connections to the "optics town" Wetzlar complement the network.
The main principle of the PhotonicNet competence network is to initiate interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of optical technologies in order to accelerate research, to increase the visibility of applications and to promote the training of young people with appropriate initiatives.
The cooperation within the competence network allows members to benefit from the knowledge, competencies and business potentials, providing opportunities to identify new application areas for the optical technologies.
Important measures to develop and support the network are:
- technology management
- startup coaching and consultancy
- training and further education
- marketing and communication
Highlights
International commitment
The supra-regional network OptecNet Deutschland e.V. was founded with
the intention of effectively representing the nine regional networking
initiatives on the national level and expanding the international
presence of optical technologies "Made in Germany". A total of more than
450 members profit from this common platform with a global web
presence, large booths at international trade fairs and congresses, and
nationwide and international PR and media.
In addition, PhotonicNet has good contacts with the Scottish Optical Association (SOA), especially in the field of biophotonics.
The "Kaiser Friedrich Research Prize"
In 2003, PhotonicNet launched a unique research award for optical
technologies. The "Kaiser-Friedrich-Forschungspreis" is awarded every
two years and endowed with 15,000 euros. The prize money is donated by
Stöbich Brandschutz GmbH, Goslar.
