Development of the world’s first four-legged walking robot

By deciding to develop a four-legged walking robot, the companies in the network have taken on an enormous technical challenge. Owing to the huge dimensions of the 8-metricton robot, an enormous number of questions need to be resolved, ranging from the choice of materials to the control system. Nobody has ever managed to construct a four-legged walking robot on this scale before.

The project is of great technical significance to companies involved, with knock-on effects embracing the fields of custom machine construction, light-weight construction, materials science, control technologies, hydraulic engineering, sensors and actuators.

The majority of the companies in the network as well as a various number of research units and universities are involved in the development and construction of this robot. The walking robot will be given the shape of a dragon and will become one of the characters in a local festival. Therefore very high safety aspects are to be considered as well. So far, an operational model which was built on a scale of 1:4 has been developed by the company Zollner Elektronik AG in Zandt.
