Heart capsule
The project partners are working on the development of a new capsular device for blood pressure measurement. The device measures no more than three millimeters in diameter. Implanted in chronic heart patients, the capsule will transmit a constant flow of blood pressure data to an external receiver. Professor Thomas Schmitz-Rode, who directs the Helmholtz Institute in Aachen, is managing the ambitious project together with Dr. Uwe Schnakenberg of the Institute of Electronic Materials (IWE) at RWTH Aachen. For this work, the two researchers received the German research ministrys coveted innovation prize in the field of medical engineering.
