Catering truck
The A380 ultra-large aircraft brings brand new challenges that involve more than the construction of the aircraft itself. New ground clearance concepts are also required. With this in mind, FFG Fahrzeugwerkstätten Falkenried GmbH, a Hamburg-based manufacturer of special vehicles, created a unique aircraft catering truck to cope with the new demands that the A380 places on logistical processes, passenger flows, catering services and so on.
The large number of passengers in the A380 requires that catering trolleys be loaded and unloaded via the upper deck. This means that catering vehicles must have a platform height of approximately 8.4 meters. Currently available vehicles do not meet this requirement. In addition, because of the location of the onboard kitchen, catering services must be delivered via a door (code-named UD1) that is positioned above the wing assembly. This presents an additional challenge for the catering vehicle design since special safety measures must be taken into consideration for the truck operator as well the aircraft.
A further aim of this project is that the vehicles design should also meet the requirements of other widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 747 or Airbus A340, enabling it to provide the basis for series production. The project comprises the following phases: specification and conceptual design, prototype construction, design adaptation to manufacturing processes, prototype testing.
