Lightweight minimal lubrication or lubrication-free toothed gears
Material, maintenance and energy requirements can be reduced through savings in the amount of lubricant used and reduced weight and friction in gears. Additionally, devices are easier to handle or can be driven at higher speeds.
A titanium gear with a weight reduction of around 36% was developed through the use of modern diamond-like carbon coatings applied using plasma surface technology. Furthermore, the life expectancy of steel gears has been increased by a factor of 6 through the use of coatings.
