Development of an innovative PEM-stack production method
Hüttenberger Produktionstechnik set out to develop a low-cost manufacturing process for PEM fuel-cell stacks in 2003. A patented process already widely employed elsewhere in the manufacture of bipolar plates was adapted for a new area of application through technology and know-how transfer. Through the use of progressive press tools and plastics injection-molding tools, the metal-plastic composite technology permits the rationalized and automated production of bipolar plates at a reproducible high level of quality.
Moreover, a number of other product-specific benefits can be achieved through the use of metals with a high electrical and thermal conductivity, as opposed to conventional composite electrode plates made from graphite.
